The Major Arcana: Meanings of All 22 Tarot Cards

The Major Arcana are the heart of the tarot deck. Here is what each of the 22 cards means, in plain language.

The 22 Major Arcana cards represent archetypal forces, the big themes that run through every human life. When one shows up in a reading, it's pointing to something significant: a turning point, a lesson, a force at work larger than the day-to-day.

The Fool Through The Chariot (0-7)

The Fool (0): New beginnings, leaps of faith, the fresh start. The Magician (1): Personal power, manifestation, using what you have. The High Priestess (2): Intuition, hidden knowledge, the inner voice. The Empress (3): Abundance, nurturing, creativity, fertility. The Emperor (4): Structure, authority, stability, fatherly energy. The Hierophant (5): Tradition, institutions, spiritual guidance. The Lovers (6): Choice, alignment, deep connection. The Chariot (7): Willpower, forward movement, overcoming opposition.

Strength Through Temperance (8-14)

Strength (8): Inner strength, courage, taming what feels wild. The Hermit (9): Solitude, inner wisdom, a period of reflection. The Wheel of Fortune (10): Cycles, fate, turning points. Justice (11): Fairness, truth, karma, accountability. The Hanged Man (12): Pause, surrender, seeing things differently. Death (13): Transformation, endings that clear the way, transition. Temperance (14): Balance, patience, integration, moderation.

The Devil Through The World (15-21)

The Devil (15): Attachment, shadow, addiction, what keeps you stuck. The Tower (16): Sudden upheaval, disruption, something coming down fast. The Star (17): Hope, healing, renewal, faith restored. The Moon (18): Illusion, the unconscious, what's hidden or murky. The Sun (19): Clarity, vitality, joy, success. Judgement (20): Reckoning, a calling, rising to something higher. The World (21): Completion, wholeness, achievement, full-circle moments.

How These Show Up in a Reading

In a reading with Frances, a Major Arcana card signals that the area it touches carries particular weight right now. If multiple Major Arcana appear, the reading is pointing to a period of significant change or soul-level work. If mostly Minor Arcana appear, you're likely navigating the practical, everyday level of the situation.
