What to Expect From Your First Tarot Reading

You booked the session. Now what? Here is an honest, practical guide to your first tarot reading, no prior knowledge required.

You don't need to know anything about tarot to have a meaningful reading. You don't need to believe in it a particular way either. You just need to show up, and ideally, bring a question or a situation that's been on your mind.

What Actually Happens

A reading with Frances usually starts with a short check-in. What brought you here? Is there something specific you want to focus on, or do you want to see what the cards draw forward on their own? Both are valid. From there, Frances shuffles and lays out a spread, a specific arrangement of cards where each position speaks to a different part of the picture.

You Don't Have to Have a Specific Question

Some people come in with a precise question: 'Should I leave this job?' Others come in with something vaguer: 'I've been feeling stuck for months and I don't know why.' Both work. The cards are good at surfacing what needs attention even when you can't name it yet. That said, the clearer your focus, the more specific the guidance can be.

What the Cards Do (and Don't) Do

Tarot cards don't predict a fixed future. They reflect what's in motion, the energies at play, the patterns showing up, the choices sitting in front of you. Frances reads them as a channel for guidance, not as a magic-eight-ball. What you do with the information is always up to you. Your free will is intact throughout.

Online Sessions Work Just as Well

Frances offers readings via video call, and distance genuinely does not affect the quality. Many clients across the DC area, from Northern Virginia to Maryland to downtown Washington, actually prefer online sessions because they can sit in their own space, light a candle, and be more relaxed than they would be in a new environment. If you're outside the DC metro area entirely, online is a great option too.

What to Do After Your Reading

Take notes, or ask for a moment to write things down during the session. Sleep on the big revelations before acting on them. Some of what comes up in a reading makes sense immediately; other parts click into place a week or a month later. Both are normal.
